a-sketch-a-day 20130102. Hel, goddess of the underworld.
Another old-and-updated ‘post-apocalyptic mythological fantasy’ concept. The general idea/feel goes something like ‘ash, smoke, soot, dust and dry earth’; a living statue made of black marble or dark granite, blank ‘scar’ and disfigured shoulder on her left side a rough/scarred surface. Story-wise Hel is powerful but often neutral and/or passive. Lady’s got no need to rush.
I'm really enjoying what you've shared of this setting/characters. It's a really unique take on Norse mythology. When you say 'scar', do you mean that is the nature of her blank face? Intriguing! More, plz.
Thank you! It's an old story concept that's fun to revisit--this the first time I've gotten deeper into these designs.
Hm. Perhaps 'scar' is a so-so term.. I'm not sure what else to call it. Yes, it's the blank face part and the uneven shoulder: like an eroded or 'scarred' statue it's smooth/detailed surface and (in case of shoulder) pieces are missing?
Fenris (and Sköll and Hati) should (hopefully) be up next.
I love it~~ Perhaps you should draw Loki with his other children next? You've just completed Hel, and Jormungandr. Thus, I would like to see how the others fair from your glorious drawing skills! ^.^
